Great Yorkshire
2009
The show season wouldn't be complete without our prilgrimage to Yorkshire. Sadly it is one of the few shows now that can guantantee a good number of horses forward in all showing classes across the board. I was looking forward this year to taking a couple of young broodmares and giving them a chance to compete at the highest level. Pinkie {Langaller Eve'n Keel} was pulled 5th in the lightweights and I admit to being disappointed with that. She has won at both Surrey County and Shropshire and West Midlands already this year, in fact they are her only outings. She is in fact a definate middleweight but as there isn't such a class except at the Hunter Show I'd put her in the lightweights and she was just too strong. In the heavyweights we had Big Bird. I have waited 7 years to get this mare into the show ring. She is by Kings Master and out of a Rakish Paddy mare. I bought her as a weaned foal at Goresbridge one very dark and wet October evening back in 2002.She was the last lot of the day and I watched this very strong, raw foal walk around the ring and thought 'one day she will grow into those limbs and that head'. I paid £270 sterling. As a yearling, 2 year old and 3 year old I could have gladly shot her as she was so ugly but she could really move and a 17h 2 year old rarely looks beautiful. Anyway 7 years and 3 foals later the ugly duckling has emerged my beautiful swan. Well I think so anyway. Taking her all the way to Yorkshire was somewhat throwing her in at the deep end but I am so delighted that she won her class. To win at the Great Yorkshire is no mean achievement for any horse but to do so on your debut I think means so much more. If she never wins another class, which she will, she can never have this accolade taken from her.
